Conventions Of Existing Music Videos Of The Alternate Rock Genre:

Cinematography:
In watching other alternate rock videao's (as posted below) it is visible to see that majority of rock video's don't follow conventional film syntax due to the facr that they don't begin with an establishing shot therefore the audience don't immediatley know the setting or location of the video. In many of these vido's however clues are given such as at the begining of 'Blink 182 - Always' there is a panning shot focusing on many objects around a room which gives off the impression we are in an apartment. The 'You Me At Six - Stay With Me' is a good example of how camera angles are used within alternate rock video's. Due to the fast pace and loud beat of the guitar and other instruments within the soundtrack of the video it allows editing to be quicker and more upbeat- therefore using high and low angle shots helps to fasten the pace of the video but also to keep it eye catching and interesting.

Editing:
In watching the video's i previously posted it is clear that alternative rock video's don't necesserily followw an editing pattern. For example the Blink-182 video uses continuity and has a storyline to the vidoe, the You Me At Six video however is very montage based and doesn't have a real sense of a storyline to it, just the same characters and artists used throughout. The All Time Low and Lower Then Atlantis video's use both montage and continuity. One thing i can tell from these video's is that a band performance is always used in them as well as an alternate storyline going on behind or in a spilt screen. All of these video's use cutting to get from shot to shot, they also keep in time with the pace of the music- so if the song speeds up the shots do also. Special effects can be seen in the All Time Low, Lower Then Atlantis and also the Blink 182 which shows that often alternate rock video's do this is ways such as changing the blur or colour of the camera shot, or adding images and illusions onto the video.

Mise En Scene:
The costumes within all of these video;s are very natural and dont stand out from people in every day life. This shows that these music videos are supposed to be realistic and true to everyday life which is shown by the lighting either being daytime or night time depending on the situation within the scene. I have realised that usually to destinguish a difference between the storyline of the music video and the performance of the band their is usualy a subtle difference between both of their lightings to show the audience that one is set as though it is present time and the other is a memory or scenario that is being sung about.

Sound/Form:
All music video'sa re performed to a soundtrack of a song by a certain artist or band. All of these video's are a pre-recorded soundtrack which then have a performance put over them. Music video's usually star the recording artsit lyp-syncing or mime-playing the song of which the video is to in order to give the audience a sense of performance. A storyline is also usually included as an alternative piece of the music video, this sometimes has a short scripted piece which is diagetically said within the music video- however none of the video's which i have posted below include this.

Enter Shikari's Music Genre:

Post Hardcore
Post-hardcore is a genre of music that developed from hardcore punk, itself an offshoot of the broader punk rock movement. Like post-punk, post-hardcore is a term for a broad constellation of groups. Many emerged from the hardcore punk scene, or took inspiration from hardcore, while concerning themselves with a wider degree of expression. The genre took shape in the mid- to late-1980s with releases from bands from cities that had established hardcore punk scenes, in particular from the scenes in Washington, D.C. such as Fugazi as well as slightly different sounding groups such as Big Black and Jawbox that stuck closer to the noise rock roots of post-hardcore.The style became commercially prominent in the first decade of the 21st century.

Heavy Metal:
Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and in the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo. The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, though they were often critically reviled, a status common throughout the history of the genre. In the mid-1970s Judas Priest helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Bands in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal such as Iron Maiden followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as "metalheads" or "headbangers".

Alternative Metal:Alternative metal (or alt-metal) is a style of heavy metal and alternative rock that gained popularity in the early 1990s. Alternative metal bands are often characterized by heavy guitar riffs, unconventional sounds within other heavy metal genres, unconventional song structures and sometimes experimental approaches to heavy music.

Electronic Music:
Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production. In general a distinction can be made between sound produced using electromechanical means and that produced using electronic technology. Examples of electromechanical sound producing devices include the telharmonium, Hammond organ, and the electric guitar. Purely electronic sound production can be achieved using devices such as the Theremin, sound synthesizer, and computer.
Electronic music was once associated almost exclusively with Western art music but from the late 1960s on the availability of affordable music technology meant that music produced using electronic means became increasingly common in the popular domain. Today electronic music includes many varieties and ranges from experimental art music to popular forms such as electronic dance music.

Enter Shikari - Constellations Lyrics

Packing the last few shirts into a bloated suitcase
The last glimpse of comfort and the ticking clock face
I swear those hands move faster every day
I'm more confused than ever but I don't beg or pray 'cause the
Sparkling light from the morning sun
Is all we should need to feel one.

I reach the station with just minutes to spare,
I glance at my watch time's going faster these days I swear,
Eyes focus up now to the train time table board
There's only two platforms to be explored,
And it's then that I admit it to my self,

That I am lost so lost
But your the constellations
That guide me

There's a train at 12, destination disaster.
It's running on time as time runs faster
On platform two it's destination sustainability
It's delayed though it was suppose to arrive at 11:50.
Platform one it says stand behind the yellow line
But I sit on the platform edge and just gaze at the time.

My mind wanders back to our oblivious existence
I'm all choked up now with the threat of distance
As the train bound for disaster chokes up to the station,
I don't board it cause I decide that it's the wrong destination,
But the train bound for sustainability is nowhere to be seen

And I'm lost so lost
Where are the constellations
That guide me?

And then I realize that
We need to use our own two feet to walk these tracks,
And we have to squad up and we have to watch each others backs,
With forgiveness is our torch and imagination our sword
Well I'll tie the ropes of hate and slash open the minds of the bored
And we'll start a world so equal and free
Every inch of this earth is yours all the land and all the sea
Imagine no restrictions but the climate and the weather
Then we can explore space together
Forever

And I'm lost so lost
Where are the constellations

And I'm lost so lost
You are the constellation (X5)

Chosen Song For Music Video:

I have decided that I want to construct my music video to 'Constellations' by 'Enter Shikari'. The song is about being able to succeed or pursue whatever dream you want in life and that ultimatley no one can controll the decisions that you make. In researching 'constellations' I have gained knowledge that constillations are actually patterns formed by prominent stars- as shown in the diagram below,

therefore by the song using lyrics such as 'you are the constillations that guide me' this gives off the idea that there are two key characters in the song, the lead singer (Rou Reynolds) who is singing about his emotions and feelings and the character he is also refering to as being his 'constillations'. This gives me a lot of ideas and thoughts of how i can interpret different things into this video which is why i believe that this is a suitable and appropriate song to use. Also I enjoy this genre of music and am a fan of the band themselves.

Enter Shikari:

Enter Shikari are a British post-hardcore group formed in 2003 in St Albans, Hertfordshire. They combine post-hardcore and various heavy metal sub-genres, such as metalcore and alternative metal, with elements of various electronic genres, such as electronica, dubstep, trance and occasionally drum and bass, creating a particularly unique sound. The band is named after a boat belonging to Roughton "Rou" Reynolds' uncle, and a character in a play which he wrote before forming the band, both of which are named Shikari. Shikari also means 'Hunter' in Marathi, Persian, Hindi, Nepali, Urdu, Punjabi and Bengali. Their debut album, Take to the Skies was released on 19 March 2007 and reached No. 4 in the Official UK Album Chart. Their second album, titled Common Dreads, was released on 15 June 2009 and debuted on the UK Albums Chart at 16. Their third studio album, A Flash Flood of Colour was released on 16 January 2012 and was positioned at the top of the UK Album Chart for almost its entire week of release, however it eventually debuted on the chart at 4.
